A group of dedicated librarians and teachers volunteered to read over 100 books and narrow it down to the list of twenty you see today.
Who decides which book wins this award?
Illinois students in grades 3rd, 4th and 5th grade are asked to read AT LEAST four books from the Bluestem list this school year. You will be asked to vote for your favorite book on the list that you’ve read in early March 2019. The book that receives the most votes from all voting Illinois students will receive the recognition of being the Bluestem Award for 2019.
Why is it called the Bluestem Award?
Big Bluestem is an Illinois state prairie grass. It symbolizes the Award. The deep roots indicate the older titles with lasting appeal. The plants new yearly growth relates to the newer titles chosen. Its changing colors are a reflection of the variety of literatures, and the three tall spikes represent the three grades of students for whom the program is intended: 3rd, 4th, and 5th.
