It's no laughing matter but how many times have you had a book turned in clearly soaked by a water bottle in a back pack, or covered in banana? If you say multiple times a year, then you are definitely working with children in an elementary library. In order to combat the amount of ruined books and to try to instill a little more care surrounding Indian Trail's library books I instituted use a book bag for Kindergarten through 2nd grade students. After children check out their books, they proceed to the bagging area of the circulation desk where they bag their own books. There are two sizes available since one size fits all never works. The gallon sized bags fit fiction and first chapter books brilliantly, or the 2 gallon bag fits any check out that includes a picture books or large informational book. I include a prominent note on each bag that includes some library guidelines, the library class schedule, and my contact information. | |
