Today on a whim I decided to read an old classic aloud. Lyle and the Birthday Party by Bernard Waber. Instead of it being a fluid reading/ listening experience it became a challenge of improvised reading on my part. Although my listeners didn't seem to notice my off roading, I did and I began wondering what happened to Bernard Waber's editor? The text it took to tell the story of how JEALOUS Lyle is about Joshua's birthday and how long it took for Lyle to feel sad and eventually go to the hospital was a really confusing (long winded) twist. Eventually my improv allowed for Lyle to feel better and cheer others up in the hospital thus cheering himself up in the process too. As I look back to some of these classics, I find that editing is a fine art which wan't really embraced. Other Lyle books such as Lyle, Lyle Crocodile is a much better edited book thus leaves a stronger impact. What books do YOU look back on with nostalgia yet upon rereading you are shocked by the vocabulary or editing or anything? |
